The new Judas Priest album, Nostradamus, has just arrived in the office â and as expected itâs an absolute monster.
There are two CDs â dubbed âAct 1â and âAct 2â â and if nothing else youâve got to admire Rob Halford and co for coming up with such a massive, challenging offering in these days of disposable ephemera.
If we had to take a reference point from Priestâs past it would be Beyond The Realms Of Death â the brooding and threatening track from the bandâs 1978 album, Stained Class.
Much of Nostradamus has that sort of flavour.
Thereâs plenty of twin riffing from the guitars of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton, natch, but thereâs loads of light and shade as well â perhaps more than you might expect.
A lot of the epic tracks are preceded by gentle, reflective acoustic workouts (kind of like what Black Sabbath used to do with things like Orchid and Embryo), with Halford adopting a deep-toned singing style. Elsewhere Rob proves his trademark silver-throated scream is remarkably intact.
Towards the end of âAct 1â thereâs a song called Lost Love which edges dangerously into twee, Greg Lake-style territory. But then, after some mysterious church chorals and demonic whispering, the next track â Persecution â explodes into your ears like the mutant offspring of Breaking The Law.
Nostradamus might be pompous and overblown, grandiose and ridiculous â it might even be spectacularly humourless and self-important â and itâs sure to divide the rock and metal community.
But yâknow what? While itâs early days â thereâs so much to take in â weâre tempted to give it a cautious thumbs-up.

Silence został założony w 1992 roku przez: Boris Benko, Matjaz Ferenc a także Primoz Hladnik. W 1994 roku zespól zagrał swój pierwszy koncert w Ljubljanie. W 1995 roku zespół opuścił Matjaz Ferenc i tak w dwuosobowym składzie band podpisał w 1996 roku kontrakt z niezależną niemiecką wytwórnią Chrom Records, a w 1997 premierę miał ich pierwszy album "Ma Non Tropo."
W ciągu kilkunastu lat działalności zespół wydał cztery studyjne albumy, z których najnowszy - Vain - A Tribute To A Ghost - został uznany przez największą słoweńską gazetę Delo, za jeden z trzech najlepszych albumów minionego roku. Muzycy Silence tworzą także ścieżki dźwiękowe do przedstawień baletowych, sztuk teatralnych ("Piotrus Pan", "Kubuś Puchatek"). Stworzyli także podkład muzyczny dla Viktorji - największej słoweńskiej nagrody muzycznej, zaś utwór, który napisali i wyprodukowali dla żeńskiego kwartetu smyczkowego Rozmarinke zajął w Słowenii drugie miejsce w preselekcjach do konkursu Eurowizji. Najnowszym dziełem duetu jest muzyka do przedstawienia "Veronika Decides ..." wystawianego przez Slovene National Theatre Opera i Ballet Ljubljana.
Muzyka Silence to kombinacja elektronicznych dźwięków z akustycznymi elementami - klasyczne smyczkowe aranżacje z egzotycznymi instrumentami (santur, kotom valiha).
Współpracowali ze znanymi producentami - Peter Penko (m.in. Laibach), Gregor Zemljic (Random Logic) - oraz artystami m.in. Anne Clark czy Ernst Horn z Deine Lakaien.

Tu macie maly zyciorys kumpla z Krakowa !!!!! Naprawde spoko przeszlosc!!!
Max Farenthide aka Angelo Tonen (Adrian Nogły) Ur 21.03.86 Kraków. Zainteresowanie muzyką rozpoczęło się od 1995/6 roku... nie pamiętam dokładnie co to była za chwila, lecz od tego się zaczęło... po 3 latach cieżkich starań i kolekcji sampli... rozpocząłem pracę na własną rękę... Powstawały różne nazwy... od DJ MOGLY, FlashMaster, AN TRAXX itd... zaczynałem od Megamixów... które umieszczałem na Feel the beat (FTB).
Po 2 latach 2003 rok odezwałem sie do DJ Silvera (ex-d.p.m) z myślą o jakiej kolwiek współpracy... ku mojemu zdziwieniu Piotr postanowił zaprosić mnie do Warszawy i powstał Equal In Love. Niestety wyszło to pod szyldem East Clubbers a ja dalej byłem z niczym. Ale nie poddawałem się! Kolejnym zespołem był "GG Project" DJ Kodi i ja (Crazy One) bardzo dużo produkcjii, z czego znów nic nie wyszło, nawet w sieci.
Po 6 miesiącach pracy postanowiłem zacząc współpracę z teraźniejszym Hard Sound i nie powiem, ale kilka produkcji pod szyldem "OMEGA" poszło w swiat... lecz to jednak nie było to.....Kolejny team to True Convention (Jovanka, DJ Fortis, DJ T-Komar, oraz DJ Finger). Zmiana klimatu, zmiana stylu produkcji... i po namowach DJ Fortisa (Rafał) za co bardzo dziekuję, postanowiłem zrobić remix dla formacji CASTEAM. Remix okazał sie nr.1 dla Cinmara i tak sie dalej potoczyło... Zostałem bardzo pozytywnie zaskoczony kiedy to właśnie Marcin mi zaproponował współpracę... Oczywiście się zgodziłem...
Na rok 2005 zrobiliśmy kilka dobrych produkcji ("Casteam time", "Hypnotic", "Tribal Island", "I Dont"). Oczywiście jestem też remixerem i właśnie jako remixer dostałem się na singla formacji EXTERMINAL - "Love's Wittnes". Także jako MAX FARENTHIDE staram się robić własne produkcje w stylu Holenderskim i nie tylko... Pierwszym singlem, który ukaże się na przełomie Marzec/Kwiecień, będzie utwór stworzony przy współpracy z Exterminal -THE MUSIC GENERATION, który równocześnie będzie hymnem PCSU na rok 2005. Od 20 stycznia 2005 roku jestem producentem wytwórni HIT N HOT MUSIC...

Temat: Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Best Of [DCD+DVD] (2004)
Released in 2004, this Box set contains an audio & video collection of some of the most memorable Siouxsie & The Banshees songs.
The material present on this release is not by any means new. The box contains one DVD and two CDs. The DVD presents itself with 14 pieces from the band's videography, for the first time available on DVD. Most of you probably know this material from VHS cassetes released in 1985 and 1992, "Once Upon A Time" and respectively "Twice Upon A Time". Not all the footage from these prior released cassetes is available on this DVD, allthough there would have been plenty of free space. Besides, on the DVD, no bonus material is present, as one might expect.
On the other hand, a new track is present, belonging to the 1996 album "Rapture", called "Stargazer". The reason might be that this video footage was released after "Twice Upon A Time" was. The DVD spans at an aproximate 54 minutes and it has "region zero", which means that it will be playable on any DVD player, regardless of it's location. One can select 2.0 or 5.1 Dolby Surround, on this DVD. The package includes another two CDs. The first CD contains exactly the tracks from the DVD, only in audio format, with the sole exception of one extra track, "Dizzy". If you are aqcuainted with the popular "Once Upon A Time" and "Twice Upon A Time" singles collections, this disc hold no particular interest.
The second CD contains an extended version for "Spellbound", not very different from the original, plus 8 other remixes. This second disc is totally useless, not to mention a piece of crap. I listened to it once and I had enough. I'm not playing it in my CD player ever again! Remixes were never among my favourite choices of music. Other than comercial, I can't really see this "Best Of"s reason for being released. It is clearly a comercial speculation from the record company or, at it's best, an introduction to Siouxie & The Banshees for first time listeners. I would much have prefered in it's place, a re-release of the band's entire videography or, why not, a re-release of the out of print 1983 live performance "Nocturne " VHS. At the same time, both CDs are, in their turn, futile. On one hand the "Once/Twice Upon A Time" releases were far more complete and, on the other hand, in 1992 "The Best Of Siouxsie And The Banshees" was released as self standing audio material. This having been said, the owner of the latter release that would be tempted into buying this DVD would have to pay extra for the two CDs that are of no value to him or her. Not to mention that a single DVD would have been far more affordable.
To sum up, this release has left me with a bitter taste, even considering that the video footage was out of print. Still, even if their music is great, Siouxie & Co. are not even among the best when it comes to video art. Rather than spending good money on this DVD, I would prefer advising the potential buyer into owning music albums like "Scream", "Nocturne" or "Ju JU". To finish on a higher note, I would like to bring to your atention that by the end of November 2004, a 4 CD compilation containing b-sides, previously unreleased and out-of-print material will be available to the public. This release will bare the name of "Down Side Up" and you'll be reading about it on Dark Romania on this column. :)
